What To Know Before Buying A Used Pickup Truck

Your Options: A majority of the pickups available in the used market are full-size. But there are some mid-size and compact models as well, just fewer. All pickups come in multiple cab configurations with different wheelbases and cargo bed lengths.

The most popular today are the crew cab models used by families for recreational things like transporting dirt bikes, horse tack gear, and other sports equipment. These could be mid-size or full-size. Compact and mid-size trucks will have cargo beds between 5.1 to 6.4 feet in length, while full-size trucks have beds ranging from 5.5 to 8 feet.

Engine: Compact and mid-size trucks are powered by a four-cylinder engine or a V6.  But full-size models usually have a V6 or a V8. Some even have V10s. Heavy-duty pickups tend to have the biggest engines with incredible torque figures. Most have automatic transmissions, but if you search hard, you may find some with stick shifts. None will be very fuel-efficient as they were built for work. Get AWD if you will drive over wet or snowy roads. AWD trucks also have low range gears that are extremely useful while driving off-road.

Spec Check: Check the payload capacity of the truck to ensure that it will be up to the task you need it for. That way, you know how much weight it can carry and its maximum towing capacity. These specs depend on the truck’s configuration and engine size. Check the owner’s manual or the compliance certification label on the driver’s side door sill or online for the accurate numbers. Ensure that the towing package includes heavier-duty suspension and transmission, beefier brakes, and a bigger radiator with added cooling capacity. Extendable mirrors are very useful too. Check the trailer hitch too. If you intend to drive off-road, ensure that skid plates are installed to protect the undercarriage and that it has off-road ready tires with deeper treads.

Inspection: Hire a trusted mechanic to check everything and give you a written report. Check the vehicle history report and maintenance schedule, title, and registration too. Take a thorough test drive and recreate the daily use conditions as best as possible.
